May. 20th, 2020 02:00 pmPlayer's Name: Wreckless
Characters Played Here: Lydia Martin and Jessica Jones
Character: Courtney Marteniz
Series/Canon: Original Character
World Description: Courtney's world is very simple, it's Earth but magic exists. The sky is blue, the sun rises and sets just like normal, along with the moon, and humans are apparently the only intelligent life form in the universe. Except not everyone is a simple human.
There are vampires, werewolves, demons, angels, The Fae, and mages. Courtney falls in the latter category. Sort of.
History:
Born October 1st, 1886, Courtney Marteniz was the only child of a wealthy plantation owner and his loving wife. On the surface, they looked like the typical happy family and, for the most part, they were. Courtney never wanted for anything except for the freedom to do as she wanted and to love who she wanted. Her father had other ideas though as he believed she would marry who he told her to as long as it was someone wealthy and of good upbringing.
They most certainly never believed that she would fall in love with the mysterious undertaker who had no fortune or family of his own but Courtney was taken with Josiah Cole almost as soon as she laid eyes on him. Still, she didn't approach him until her Abuelo's death seven years after the two of them first laid their eyes upon one another. From there, their friendship was fast-growing and their love for another one even more so.
In their time together, Courtney came to realize that Joe was a mage like her though he was on the opposite end of the spectrum from her as his power was tied to Death. Not that it scared Courtney as she vowed to teach him magic and to help him understand his power so he could control it better. For a little while, it worked but not even someone who had been raised knowing her power could be a match for what was to come. There was no way she could fight Death himself when he set his focus on Joe.
Despite her concerns and the fact that she didn't trust the man who had shown up on Joe's doorstep with the promise he could teach him how to resurrect his family, her lover wouldn't listen to her. Still, Courtney didn't give up on Joe. Not even when the town began to turn on him out of fear. She followed when he was run out of town, pleading with him just to listen to her because she knew there was no way to bring his family back.
In the end, she was there on the day Death betrayed him. She watched in horror from afar as he raised his brother who inevitably turned against him in a fit of madness and burned him alive. Courtney was the one who put out the flames and tried to save him but ultimately couldn't. Broken with grief, she gathered his ashes together and used magic to seal them in an urn. Completely unaware at first of the role she was playing in the creation of the Shade.
Not until years later when another strange man appeared on her doorstep and told her the significance of the urn. Who told her what Josiah had done and what he had become, of what he could be and why the urn needed protecting. Why she needed to be the one to protect it.
From that day on, Courtney continued to live, kept alive both by her power and by the role as the Keeper of the Urn. She watched and listened as stories of the Lord of the Vale and Reaper of the Wayward started to appear but ultimately she kept herself away from The Shade because she knew their time had passed.
Also due to her ever-youthful appearance and her precious cargo, Courtney never stays in one place for more than a decade. Sometimes even less than that if someone comes looking for the Urn in the hopes of controlling the Shade. So far though, she has beaten everyone who has tried to take the urn from her. Even The Scourge.
Powers:
- Spellcasting: Can cast various spells, protective barriers, incantations, so forth
- Life Mage: Courtney has the ability to affect and manipulate life energies/forces around her. Her passive effect on people around her is that they just feel good. Any aches and pains will fade away, any feelings of fatigue will be replaced by energy and so on. Actively, she can manipulate one's life energy to heal or, if she really focuses, to harm even though she doesn't like to do that. But she does see how useful it can be to drain a being's life energy if she needs to. She also has an effect on plant life as she can 'encourage' plants to grow (or die). She cannot manipulate plants as an earth mage can but she can grow some very nice gardens.
As Keeper of the Urn, Courtney is not a goddess, but rather a divine acolyte of the Shade, tied not merely to her sacred charge but to his celestial fate. She is not merely human, she is not divine--she is something new, something very similar to the archangels of Christian myth save that she has free will--complete with a warrior's aspect of armor and sword when she reveals her true face as a servant of Creation.
When in battle or about to fight, she can summon the armor and a sword. She also has enhanced speed and strength which makes it easier for her to fight other supernatural beings and her power as a life mage makes it very difficult to kill her. Not impossible but difficult.
Does your character have any close ties to existing canon characters? Yes, she has a close tie to the Shade as she was originally created for a PSL with him. EC knows that I am bringing her in as she has helped me to build her history and her powers which we have tweaked a bit because she was actually an angel in the PSL.
Why do you think your character would work in this setting? Courtney would be a little unsure about her situation at first but she will learn to adjust fairly quickly considering her whole life is about adjusting and adapting to survive.
How do you plan to expand their CR? Courtney is a warm, kind woman who has a tendency to take people under her wing. So she won't be as grumpy as Jess. Also, with her close tie to Joe, there is lots of stuff that can go on there and CR that can be made.
What will your character do for work? Courtney is flexible and has been alive for so long means she has different skills in different areas. She might go be a dancer, work in a salon, or even work as a nurse because of her power. But I might see about her working at a spa because she would be perfect there.

"Papa, you can't mean it."
"Of course, I do. I mean what I say and that's final, we won't talk about this anymore!
"But you could let Courtney help you. She is the strongest, she could give you more time."
"No. It would cost her too much. She should focus on living, not holding off Death. She should find a husband and have children, that's what she can do for me."
It was the same argument that had been happening constantly since Abuelo's announcement that he would soon be passing on. It wasn't a surprise to the Marteniz family as they had known for a long time that he would die at some point before his sixtieth birthday. Or at least, he had always known after being told ten years before by an aunt who had foreseen it. Courtney had found out only a few days ago and she was still reeling from the news. Of course, she had offered to use her own magic to help him but her beloved grandfather had declared it impossible. He had told her that it wasn't something she could save him from but also they couldn't risk others finding out she was different. That the whole Marteniz family was different.
"They would burn even you, my love, for the gifts you have. We cannot risk it."
Sitting on the porch, she felt restless and angry as she wondered what the point of having magic was. She could use it to keep their land rich and productive but she couldn't use it to save someone she loved. How was she supposed to deal with that?
Tired of hearing the argument through the window of the living room, Courtney rose to her feet and hurried down the front steps of the large home that her Abuelo had built after arriving in Silverstone. At first, she didn't know where she was going but it quickly became clear as she neared Josiah Cole's home.
Josiah Cole, now he was a strange one. He was also terribly fascinating and in a way that she was sure would shock most of her friends if she ever admitted to finding intriguing. Okay, maybe not so much as all the women seemed to find Josiah Cole oddly attractive but few would dare speak to him. They all whispered that he was a little strange and way too quiet. More comfortable with the dead than the living.
That didn't matter to Courtney though as she had never been uncomfortable with Death. At least, not until now. Until the moment that it was going to take the person she loved most in the world. The one person who stood up to her father and understood the freedom that she craved.
Turning her thoughts back to Josiah Cole, she was considering the fact of whether he would actually speak to her or not when she came around the corner and found him....half-naked and sweaty. He didn't see her, of course, since he seemed to be staring out at nothing while she was behind him but...oh.
Swallowing thickly, she was more than aware of how her heart was racing as she let her gaze drift over the sight of his muscular back and his hair. She had never realized it was so red before.
Her lips parted and she drew in a soft breath, not realizing that it was almost a gasp while she pressed a hand against the wood frame of the building beside her. She thought about hurrying away before he realized that someone was there but it seemed it was too late as he turned to look at her, looking as surprised as she felt. It seemed it was much too late for them both.
